South East Hound Club Open Show 2014 Critique

It was a long journey to and from Scotland so I would like to thank those who went out of their way to make my trip easier and to my stewards, the committee members and all who gave me the opportunity to go over so many of our special breed.

PUPPY 3(2)
1.  Helps and Helps  BEARDSWOOD SPEY  This well-grown 7mth dog pup instantly brought a smile to my face with the sheer joy and exuberance at his outing.  Good dark eyes, well positioned in masculine head.  Ears perhaps a little heavy but of nice carriage when not puppy ‘bouncing’ on top of his head.  Already has strong neck.  Good width and depth of chest for age.  Straight strong forelegs. Unexaggerated topline into smooth set on of tail giving unbroken fall away line to croup. Tail of good length and thickness. Hocks strong. Movement fore and aft showing no looseness.  Side profile still bouncy as I would expect from a happy baby but showing reach and drive.  Standing covered a lot of ground. BP and RBPIS

JUNIOR 3
1. Helps and Dove  FOXCLIFFE CLASSIC LIBERTY FREEDOM AT BEARDSWOOD (Imp USA) 8mth bitch. Longish head carrying well folded ears of reasonable size.  Preferred darker eye of (2).  Long neck.  Rather upright in upper arm.  Plenty of chest width; expect in time should drop and fill.  Has a little more bend of stifle than (2).  Flattens her back at present.  Tail of good length.  Moves lightly and with balance.  2.  Girling PYEFLEET TIMOTHY  Workmanlike, medium size 17mth dog, still very much the adolescent.  Shorter and broader in head than (1) with attractive expression.  Well muscled frame with strong coupling.  Less turn of stifle than (1) but with greater width of thigh and stronger hocks taking age and gender into consideration.  Upper arm and shoulder placement better than (1) but movement not as parallel.  3. Barter and Christian EHLARADAWN RUNE

NOVICE 5 (2)
1. Whiteman PACKWAY LONESOME DOVE TAF Young dog, rising 2 yrs old presented in good coat and condition. Nice head and expression.  Neat ears.  Preferred eye colour of (2).  Longish neck.  Strong rise, slightly steep croup. Front OK; maturity should fill across the chest. Turns front feet out a little on the move and needs to extend in movement as he is inclined to ‘bunch’ up in the middle.  Stacked, he exhibits more curve than length.  Is going to improve and I will watch him with interest.  2. Smith NIMLOTH BELTHIL.  Very feminine,  smallish 2yr old bitch.  Pretty head and the gentlest of eyes and expression.  Longish ears. Good reach of neck. Unexaggerated topline into smooth fall away.  Feet neat.  Rather straight in stifle and upper arm.  Moved calmly around the ring covering the ground quite deceptively and demonstrating better movement than (3).  Woolf GREYFLAX OOPSIE DAISY

GRADUATE 3
1.  Grimshaw LODHAINN BENNBEHEULA TO JAMALISON  2yr old bitch. Feminine head and neat little ears.  Lovely dark eyes.  Neck could be stronger.  Straight forelegs. Feet could be tighter.  Good proportionate length; would like a little more heft in the brisket.  Good tuck up showing rise over loin to advantage.  Liked her rear end which altho not particularly broad had curves and angulations in the right places for me. Moved out well and coordinated, better coming than going.  RBOB  2.  Smith  ROSSLYN POLLIE OF NIMLOTH  5yr old, very laid back mature bitch who was in total harmony with her handler.  Gentle , kind face with well shaped and placed eyes and ears.  Back flattened particularly on the move and rear movement a little erratic.  Nicely sloped pasterns.  Feet long.  Nice depth of chest and length of ribbing.  Scored over (3) in freedom of movement as (3) rather stiff today. 3. Bunce PANTAWICK AETHELWYNE

OPEN DOG 2
1. Faircloth BEARDSWOOD RIPLEY FOR CALBRAITH  Tall 2yr old dog.  Masculine head.  Eyes lighter than my preference but well positioned.  Ears could be smaller.  Neck well set on.  Strong topline stacked and on the move.  Well ribbed back and flowing into hard muscled loin and haunches.   Powerful, enthusiastic forward movement which on occasion unbalances him.  Overall, a strong, athletic young male in good coat and condition coming into physical maturity.   2. Gilhooly & Morrissey LORD SEAFIELD OF HARTVALLEY  I do enjoy seeing the older hounds.   I judged this lovely lad as a youngster and am delighted to see him belie his nearly 9yrs by striding around the ring soundly and in good coat and condition.  Very masculine head with darker eye than (1).  Ears of good size and carriage.  Good front and shoulder placement.  Nice outline stacked but flattens on the move.  Better shaped feet than (1).  I did swither but the strength and fluidity of the younger hound made my decision.

OPEN BITCH 8 (2)
1.  Faircloth  BEARDSWOOD POESY AT CALBRAITH  Taller, rangier bitch of 4yrs in good hard condition.  Built on longer lines throughout than (2) but without losing her curves either stacked or moving.  Nicely proportioned head and eye set with well carried ears.  More pronounced rise over loin than (2) but not as broad across the beam.  Good definition of ribs and loin.  Strode out, displaying strong rear drive with extension at the front which she maintained  throughout and this tipped my decision between (1) and (2). BOB   2. Girling PYEFLEET SCRUMPIE  Another 4yr old.  Strongly built, mature and workmanlike bitch.  Kind expression. Thickish ears.  Strong neck and good front assembly.  Preferrred her croup and strength of hock  altho not as much rear angulation as (1). Thought this would be my winner but her lack of enthusiasm and drive today (in the increasing heat?) slackened and slowed her movement which just lost her the placing.  3.  Helps and Helps BEARDSWOOD RHYMI
